abstract = {Sunscreens are essential for shielding the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can lead to sunburn, early aging, pigmentation, and even skin cancer. With growing awareness about skin health, herbal products are becoming increasingly popular due to their natural origin, better safety profile, and fewer side effects compared to synthetic ingredients. In this context, the present study explores the development and evaluation of a herbal sunscreen cream formulated with Manjistha (Rubia cordifolia) extract an Ayurvedic herb known for its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and complexion-enhancing benefits.
A hydroalcoholic extract of Manjistha roots was incorporated into an oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion cream base prepared using commonly used cosmetic excipients. The formulation was assessed for key physicochemical characteristics such as appearance, texture, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, viscosity, stability, and Sun Protection Factor (SPF) using UV spectrophotometric analysis. The Manjistha-based cream showed a smooth, uniform texture, good spreadability, and a skin-friendly pH. Initial SPF evaluation suggested moderate UV protection, which may be attributed to the phenolic and flavonoid compounds present in the extract that help absorb UV radiation and combat free radical damage.
Overall, the findings highlight that Manjistha has promising potential as a natural photoprotective ingredient in sunscreen formulations. Besides offering UV protection, the herbal cream may also support overall skin health through its antioxidant and rejuvenating effects. Further studies, especially in vivo SPF assessments and formulation optimization, are recommended to fully establish the commercial applicability of Manjistha-based sunscreen products.},
