ELECTRICITY GENERATION BY WASTE MATERIAL

  • The increasing global demand for energy, coupled with the growing problem of waste management, has led to significant interest in utilizing waste materials for electricity generation. Among various waste materials, paper waste, including industrial by-products and discarded paper products, presents a viable and sustainable feedstock for energy production. This paper explores the different methods of generating electricity from paper waste, including combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, and biogas production through anaerobic digestion. Each method has its own set of advantages and challenges in terms of efficiency, environmental impact, and economic feasibility. While direct combustion is the simplest method, gasification and pyrolysis offer higher efficiency and lower emissions. Biogas production, when combined with organic waste, provides a renewable energy option with additional benefits such as waste reduction and fertilizer production. Despite the potential, issues such as high initial investment costs, waste sorting requirements, and technological complexity remain significant barriers to widespread adoption. Nevertheless, recent advancements in waste-to-energy technologies, along with a growing emphasis on sustainability and circular economy principles, highlight the promising future of paper waste as a source of renewable energy. This review underscores the need for further research and innovation to enhance the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental performance of these technologies for large-scale implementation.
