Pāṇini’s Grammar and Artificial Intelligence Foundations of Computational Linguistics in Indian Linguistic Tradition

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Linguistics (CL) have transformed the way human language is analyzed, processed, and generated by machines (Jurafsky & Martin, 2021). Interestingly, the foundations of formal linguistic modeling can be traced back to ancient Indian grammatical traditions, particularly the work of Panini in the Astadhyayi. His rule-based and highly structured grammatical system demonstrates remarkable similarities with modern computational approaches such as formal language theory and algorithmic processing (Staal, 1988). This article explores the relationship between AI, computational linguistics, and Paninian grammar, highlighting its relevance to modern Indian language technologies. A descriptive and analytical method is used based on classical linguistic texts and contemporary computational research (Cardona, 1997). The study suggests that Panini's linguistic framework offers an early model of rule-based computation that aligns conceptually with modern natural language processing (NLP) (Bharati et al., 1995).
