Regional Television News and Political Communication: A Comparative Analysis of Telugu News Channels

  • Abstract:
  • Telugu-language news television in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is best understood as a politically embedded regional media system rather than simply a set of competing broadcasters. Available scholarship points to rapid channel growth, close links among media ownership and party politics, and the importance of the Telangana movement as a high-stakes moment in which television helped circulate arguments across a wider public sphere. At the same time, studies of Indian television caution against treating channel plurality as evidence of editorial independence or democratic balance. This review synthesises direct Telugu-focused research with broader scholarship on Indian television’s political economy, news production and public communication. It distinguishes evidence about ownership and institutions from evidence about news output, audience reception and electoral effects. The literature supports a strong case for comparing Telugu channels along ownership and alignment, issue and actor visibility, framing and debate formats, regional identity, newsroom practice, and audience response. It does not, however, provide a robust, replicated, head-to-head content analysis of Telugu television channels. The review therefore offers a grounded analytical framework and a provisional account of what can be concluded, while identifying the evidence needed for a definitive comparative study.
