  • Abstract:
  • Thermodynamics is one of the basic disciplines of engineering science dealing with the relationship between heat, work, energy, temperature and properties of matter. The present article explores the laws of thermodynamics and its engineering applications focusing on Zeroth, First, Second and Third laws of thermodynamics. The analysis provides an explanation of the use of the First Law to create energy balances for boilers, turbines, compressors, pumps, heat exchangers and power generation systems. The Second Law is analyzed by the entropy generation, irreversibility and limitation on heat to work conversion. The major thermodynamic cycles such as Otto cycle, Diesel cycle, Brayton cycle, Rankine cycle, Carnot cycle, and refrigeration cycle are comparatively studied with respect to engineering application and thermodynamic consideration. In addition, the study demonstrates that exergy analysis is an important extension of the traditional energy analysis and hence the destruction of useful work potential can be identified. Thermodynamic principles are also applied in various engineering design and performance evaluation problems such as applications in refrigeration, air conditioning and steam power generation. It is shown that along with energy conservation, entropy generation, exergy destruction and energy quality must be considered to optimise the process effectively from an engineering point of view. The findings of the study are that the combined use of the thermodynamic laws is essential for improving efficiency, reducing irreversibility in the engineering systems and for developing sustainable engineering systems.
